Design students from Aalto University took the challenge to imagine a more sustainable future by developing their own biomaterials. Altogether 22 students used renewable raw materials like wood-based cellulose, food waste, feathers and plants. Those materials were collected, foraged and scavenged to inspire novel product ideas for a more hopeful future.

Aalto-yliopiston CHEMARTS yhdistää biomateriaalien tutkimuksen ja muotoilun. Yhteistyön tärkein tavoite on innostaa eri alojen opiskelijat ja tutkijat kehittämään uusia ideoita liittyen selluloosan ja muiden biomateriaalien hyödyntämiseen. Kesällä 2017 opiskelijoiden materiaaleina olivat mm. pajunkuori, kuusenkuori, sahajauho, maa-aines, järviruoko, nanoselluloosa ja selluloosa-asetaatti. Materiaalikokeiluiden pohjalta opiskelijat kehittivät kestävän kehityksen huomioivia tuoteideoita ja konsepteja.

Designing Biomaterials for the Future
CHEMARTS is a long-term collaboration since 2011 between two Aalto University schools, The School of Chemical Engineering and The School of Arts, Design and Architecture. CHEMARTS courses and other activities focus on biomaterials, especially on wood-based cellulose. What: The New Biomateriality Lab presents new Finnish biomaterials, mainly based on wood. All materials have been invented and produced in multidisciplinary research projects. The exhibition is coordinated by Aalto University’s CHEMARTS collaboration and participating projects are DWoC, NoMa, Hiilinielu Designstudio and Trash2Cash. The main partners are Aalto University, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Technical University of Tampere, Universities of Applied Sciences in Lahti and Tampere, University of Vaasa and Design Forum Finland, in collaboration with various companies, funded by Tekes and EU. Professors Tapani Vuorinen and Pirjo Kääriäinen awarded at the Opening of the Academic Year 2.9.2014.
The aim of the Aalto Act of the Year Award is to recognise a significant initiative or action in the Aalto University community. The Aalto Act of the Year Award 2014 goes to Professors Pirjo Kääriäinen from the School of Arts, Design and Architecture and Tapani Vuorinen from the School of Chemical Technology in recognition of their interdisciplinary work in creating the CHEMARTS project.
Multidisciplinary expertise from Aalto University was on display at the end of November in Brussels at the paper industry’s European Paper Week.
Aalto University is part of the Design Driven Value Chains in the World of Cellulose project, which received nearly 3 million euros in funding during the Tekes Large Strategic Research Openings application round.
