Sounds like a fairytale, right? But it could be the future \u2013 and not even a far-away one.<\/p>\n<p><em>Unlikely materials<\/em> presents a collection of bio-based material innovations and early experiments made with novel technologies. COFFEE GROUNDS<\/h3>\n<p>New applications for the coffee ground waste \u2013 showcasing prototypes of acoustic panels and explorations of the material properties.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Valenti Soler<\/strong> (acoustic panels) and <strong>Andrzej Tarasiuk<\/strong> (material properties), ARTS<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The waste coffee grounds were provided by Paulig and Natural Indigo Finland.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5. WHEAT STRAW<\/h3>\n<p>Jersey fabric made of agricultural wheat waste with the Ioncell\u00ae technology.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Nicole Nygren<\/strong> in collaboration with <strong>Michael Hummel<\/strong>\u2019s team, CHEM\u00a0<\/em><br \/>\n<em>The straw pulp was provided by Fortum Oyj and spun into Ioncell\u00ae fibres at Aalto University.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>6. CATTAIL STEMS and LEAFS<\/h3>\n<p>Bio-based alternative to styrofoam.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Lukas Schuck<\/strong>, <strong>Harvey Shaw<\/strong>, ARTS, <strong>Tilda Ostberg Alagarda<\/strong> and <strong>Ada Luukkanen<\/strong>, CHEM<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>7. ALGAE<\/h3>\n<p>The Algae hat project research design possibilities for the material and created a playful hat concept that could be made by anyone at home.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Nina Riutta<\/strong>, ARTS<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>8. LUPINE<\/h3>\n<p>The project investigates alternative textile materials that can be derived from plants that are considered weeds, showcasing first examples of knitted yarn.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Mithila Mohan<\/strong>, ARTS, <strong>Maija Vaara<\/strong>, <strong>Laura Koskelo <\/strong>and <strong>Jaana Vapaavuori<\/strong>, CHEM\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>9. NETTLE<\/h3>\n<p>Plant mainly considered as a weed \u2013 the doctoral research explores nettle fibre and its potential in the textiles sector.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Samica Sadik<\/strong>, University of Helsinki<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>10. WOOD<\/h3>\n<p>Bubbles with Benefits is an experimental material project to create cellulose-based bubble wrap.<br \/>\n<em>Research by <strong>Satu Paavonsalo<\/strong> and <strong>Valentin Schwarz<\/strong>, ARTS<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>11. WHEAT STRAW<\/h3>\n<p>Exploring potential applications for the straw waste \u2013 Utenstraw is a biodegradable, single-use utensils made from straw.<br \/>\n<em>Research and design by <strong>Tiina Otala<\/strong>, <strong>Tuomas Laakkonen<\/strong>, ARTS and <strong>Tam Nguyen<\/strong>, CHEM<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Fortum aims to scale up its wheat straw processing by 2028, and novel applications for the growing straw waste.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>12.
